Posted on September 1, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

On Saturday, October 23, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Tapestry will host the 2010 Tapestry Adoption & Foster Care Conference at Irving Bible Church. This year’s keynote speaker will be Sherrie Eldridge, author of several books including Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adoptive Parents Knew. Similar to past Tapestry conferences, this year’s conference will feature a wide array of adoption and foster care related breakout sessions.  In addition, the 2010 Tapestry Conference will include an adoptee track (for adoptees ages 18 years and older) designed to help adoptees explore the unique journey they experience into adulthood and beyond.

The Tapestry Conference website (www.tapestryconference.org) will be up and running by the time online registration begins on Tuesday, September 7th.  For now, however, you can find out more details about this free conference, including a detailed schedule and the line-up of breakout sessions, by clicking here.

We hope that you will join us for the 2010 Tapestry Adoption & Foster Care Conference.  Be sure to register as soon as possible once online registration opens on September 7th, as space (in particular childcare space) is very limited.

How has Tapestry impacted you?

Posted on August 25, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

Over the past five years Tapestry has had the privilege of walking alongside countless families and individuals as they travel the adoption and foster care journey.  Maybe you are one of the families that God has blessed in some way through this ministry — or maybe you are a part of an adoption or foster care ministry at another church that Tapestry has helped.  Whatever the case, we would love to hear your story as we celebrate 5 years of ministry in September.

So would you do us a huge favor?  If Tapestry has impacted or blessed your family or your church ministry in some way please share your story with us.  You can do so by commenting on our blog or emailing us at tapestry@irvingbible.org.  It doesn’t need to be long or even very detailed, just whatever you want to share.  It will be a huge encouragement to us and will also allow us to share some of these stories of how God has used the ministry at our upcoming 5 years of ministry celebration on Saturday, September 18th.

Speaking of the 5 year celebration, if you haven’t already please make plans to join us on Saturday, September 18.  Doors open at 6:15 pm with dinner and the program starting promptly at 6:35 pm.  Adults will enjoy dinner followed by great stories, videos and a chance to hear about where Tapestry has been and a glimpse at what lies ahead.  In addition, the evening will feature the opportunity to bid on some exciting raffle packages as well as other opportunities to support Tapestry. The evening is completely free but space is limited, so make plans to join us and register nowClick here for more details or for questions contact Amy Monroe at tapestry@irvingbible.org.

Adoption/Foster Care Conference Featuring Dr. Karyn Purvis

ETC Conference

Have you heard about the Empowered To Connect Conference in Nashville, Tennessee on September 10-11, 2010?  It’s not too late to register to attend this unique and exciting conference hosted by Show Hope and featuring Dr. Karyn Purvis.

Wendy Cosby recently blogged about this conference stating:

The presentation by Dr. Karyn Purvis, and ministry leaders Michael and Amy Monroe, includes invaluable tools and resources to adoptive or foster families, professionals and church ministry leaders alike. I am particularly excited about the breakout sessions for church ministries. The body of Christ is a critical piece of the support structure for adoptive and foster families, throughout the adoption process and beyond. Families need a safe place to come and be “real.” They need a place to share their joys and setbacks; a place to be loved, encouraged, equipped, and empowered.

Orphan Sunday – November 7, 2010

Orphan Sunday - November 7, 2010

We are called to defend the fatherless…to care for the child that has no family…to visit orphans in their distress…to show the love of Christ to the ‘least of these’. On Orphan Sunday 2010, Christians across the nation and around the world will stand up for the orphan.

Orphan Sunday is an opportunity to invite the church and our community to respond to God’s call to care for the orphan. On this Sunday in November, Christians will stand for the orphan through hundreds of events across America and beyond, all sharing a single goal: that God’s great love for the orphan will echo in our lives as well. Through sermons and small groups, concerts and prayer gatherings — each event will focus on rousing believers with God’s call to care for the orphan…and what we can do in response.

Visit www.orphansunday.org for more information and some great resources to help you and your church join the movement to live out God’s heart for the orphan.

Connected to Those Who “Get It”

Posted on July 27, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

Connected to Those Who "Get It"As I am typing this, our beautiful daughter is sleeping in her crib just a few feet away.  Holding her in my arms as she nestled down for rest, I began to reflect on where we were a little over a year ago.

Spring of 2009 held very different thoughts and emotions than those we are experiencing now.  Spring, the time of new life and renewal, had been disappointing.  After the initial excitement of deciding to adopt from Ethiopia, completing our paperwork, and beginning our wait, our agency informed us that our wait time would be double what we initially thought.  Our Spring looked bleak as we settled in for more waiting.  While I am not a sentimental person when it comes to holidays, Mother’s Day hit me with a vengeance.  I was shocked by the intensity of my emotions that day as I felt so helpless and sad.  We were later to find out that our daughter was born only days before that Mother’s Day.  That Spring had brought an amazing life into this world; so far away in Gondar, Ethiopia, our daughter had been born!  God’s timing, as always, had been perfect.

The Whole Picture

Posted on July 19, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

The Whole Picture - Sveta & CherylAs my daughter, Sveta, and I sat looking at the precious few photographs we have from her early childhood, we both enjoyed studying the familiar features of her sky-blue eyes and smooth olive skin.  We laughed about the many changes in hair color, length and style.  And as she remembered the story behind one of her kindergarten portraits, I listened carefully to every detail she could recall.

One photograph, however, captured my heart and held my attention.  She was too young when it was taken to remember the slate grey and turquoise sweater she wore, or the occasion of the photo; however, she had many memories of the special person holding her close, their faces almost touching.  Her birthmother looked beautiful in her jewel toned sweater and neatly applied lipstick.  Her eyes and skin tone looked so much like those of the girl now sitting beside me on the bed.  How old was she? How much time had passed? Where is she now? Does she think about …?
