All of the Above

All of the Above

I was sitting at my computer on Saturday morning when I heard Grant, my eight year-old, yelling at his little brother – something about “why did you take that . . .” As I rounded the corner to see what was going on, Grant ran into me. I knelt down and asked what was wrong. “He took it from me,” he said – and then let out a short, loud scream of frustration. “I’m just so mad at him. Why did you even have to adopt him anyway?”

Wow!  Where did that come from?  Gathering my thoughts, I decided to seize the opportunity and have a little adoption chat.  After all, that’s a pretty important question.  I didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to answer.

“That’s a good question,” I said.

“I mean you already had two boys,” he said, referring to himself and his older brother, both of whom we adopted as infants, “so why did you have to adopt him too?”

Older Child Adoption Parent Support Group

Posted on May 18, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

For well over a year now we have dreamed of starting a small group designed for parents who have adopted or are considering adopting an older child (preschool and older).  However, the challenge has been that we simply have not had the right families, in terms of experience and perspective, to lead it — until now

This coming Sunday, May 23, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, in the Training Center (across from The Tubes) at Irving Bible Church, Tapestry will be starting a new small group for parents who have adopted or are considering adopting an older child (preschool age and older).  The group will be led by the Macdonalds and the Hames — both very experienced families who have a real heart to help other families travel the journey of older child adoption well.

This group will meet on the fourth Sunday night of each month — so go ahead and mark your calendars now.  Children ages birth through 5th grade can participate in the Sunday evening children’s programs during this time.

Scott & Annie’s Story

Posted on May 12, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

McClellan Town

Scott and Annie McClellan are critical part of the Tapestry leadership team, and God has been writing an amazing story with their lives (and that of their daughter’s, Elise) over the past several years.  A couple of weeks ago, Scott and Annie had the opportunity to tell just a small piece of their story — which is, after all, also very much Elise’s story — during the Sunday services at Irving Bible Church.

Their story is one filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, and joys and challenges.  But it is also most certainly a story of faith, hope and love.  Click here to listen to this brief (9 minute) glimpse at Scott, Annie and Elise’s story.

Traveling Companions – Saturday, May 8 at IBC

Posted on May 7, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

On Saturday, May 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, Tapestry will host an event called Traveling Companions: Bringing Family & Friends Along on the journey

This unique event is focused on helping those involved in the adoption and foster care process understand how to effectively educate family and friends and help them more fully embrace every aspect of the adoption and foster care journey.  The event is ideal to invite family (such as grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc) and friends to attend with you, and will be a great way to start a healthy dialog about how they can better understand the process and some of the unique issues and challenges that adoptive families often face.  In addition, this event will be highly practical and will rely heavily on stories about real families and their experiences.

This event is free and training credits will be available, but childcare will not be available for this event.  For more information contact Amy Monroe at tapestry@irvingbible.org.

Created To Connect Study Guide

Posted on May 5, 2010 by The Tapestry TeamNo Comments

Created To Connect Study GuideIntroducing the Created To Connect: A Christian’s Guide to The Connected Child

This study guide, created by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Michael & Amy Monroe, is designed to help illuminate the biblical principles that serve as the foundation for the philosophy and interventions detailed in Dr. Purvis’ book, The Connected Child.  Together with the book, the study guide is a great tool to help adoptive and foster parents better understand how to build strong and lasting connections with their children, and is ideal for use in small groups as well as by individuals or couples.

Visit the Empowered To Connect website to download and print the entire (76 page) study guide, or view and print it chapter-by-chapter.  There is no charge for this or any of the Empowered To Connect resources, but be sure to let other adoptive and foster parents know about this new study guide.

Flip Flops & Smiles

 Stotler Family Flip Flops

“Just wanted to say thanks again for letting our family participate in your event today.  Such a blessing to our family.  The kids wanted to send this picture to ya’ll to say thanks for the flip flops.  Another answered prayer.  Who knew?  God knew!”    — The Stotler Family

This past Saturday over two dozen volunteers came together at Irving Bible Church as part of the city-wide Go & Be effort to help Tapestry host another Foster Family Fun Fest for over 60 area foster children and their foster parents.  The event was filled with games, crafts, clowns and lots of other fun activities — including a larger than life water balloon launcher.  In addition, IBC’s children ministry had recently collected over 350 pairs of flip flops to give to foster children, so each child who attended the fun fest got to take home some new flip flops.

Based on the laughter and smiles, it was clear that everyone — the kids, the parents and the volunteers — had a great time.
